It All Started with a Black and White Leaflet

Back in 1998, in Sri Lanka, I was just a schoolboy. Leaflets were a big thing back then; they were the go-to method for advertising courses or selling items.

I vividly remember receiving a leaflet from a stranger. It was adorned with photos of a machine and a catchy headline: “Computer for Kids.” Unlike other leaflets that I might have discarded, this one somehow made its way into my pocket. I was with my dad that day, and I found myself reading it in the van on our way home. It had a chart with levels and some black and white photos of bulky PCs – a glimpse into the DOS and Windows 95 era.

This seemingly insignificant leaflet sparked a conversation with my parents, and soon after, I was enrolled in my very first computer class for kids in Sri Lanka.

Looking back, I realize it was this simple black and white leaflet that triggered my lifelong passion and curiosity in programming and computer science in general.
